ROMA REELS
Flashbacks of Forgotten Crimes: Remembering the Roma Genocide Through Youth-Led Digital Storytelling
Roma Reels is an innovative transnational remembrance initiative, funded under the EU’s CERV Programme, that aims to strengthen the memory of the Roma genocide (Porajmos) and the wider history of persecution of Roma communities in the Balkans. The project focuses on empowering young Roma aged 18-30 with the skills, tools and platforms to record testimonies, create short-form reels and share forgotten history with new audiences, at a time when the voices of survivors are rapidly disappearing. Running for 24 months, Roma Reels brings together NGOs, youth organisations, training providers and consultancies from Greece, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria, with the support of the PAL Network. Together, the partnership works to bring remembrance into the digital spaces where young people spend their time, and to turn memory into a tool against antigypsyism, hate speech and discrimination.
The Power of Digital Memory
01
Preserve Memory
We record testimonies and archives of Roma survivors and their descendants before they are lost.
02
Empower Youth
Young Roma aged 18-30 learn storytelling and filmmaking and tell their own history.
03
Defend Democracy
Remembering the past helps us counter antigypsyism and hate speech today.
Project Aim
The main aim of Roma Reels is to raise awareness of the forgotten crimes committed against Roma, while promoting democratic values, intercultural dialogue and civic participation. By training young Roma aged 18-30 in digital storytelling, we turn testimonies and archives into short reels that make Roma history accessible, engaging and impossible to ignore, at a time when the voices of survivors are fading.
Who is Roma Reels for?
- Roma youth (18-30):

Their testimonies are recorded with consent and shared with dignity. - Educators, NGOs and cultural institutions:

Roma and non-Roma alike, invited to learn, reflect and join the dialogue against antigypsyism and discrimination.
